Leadership and Self Deception (San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc, 2010)

While attending a Biomet 3i Business Skills Academy session in Denver, our lecturer, Dr. Brent Boyce made a recommendation that I read this book.

While waiting on my flight home I was browsing one of the concourse bookstores and picked up a copy.

I read the majority of the book on my flight and finished the remainder that evening.

This book is written as a parable and promotes the idea that we often view and treat others as objects rather than people.

This is considered being “in the box” and limits our potential.

While “in the box” we exhibit self-betrayal which leads to self-deception.

When we are self-deceived we tend to

  • Inflate others faults
  • Inflate our own self-worth and value
  • Justify our self-betrayal
  • Blame others

To get “out of the box” we should do our best to help others succeed and accomplish their goals.

All in all, a very good read.

It will make you think about how you approach others.
